A Guest's Perspective by Ken Bracken

I came to Toastmasters, curious to explore the challenge of getting up in front of strangers and talking in front of them. I had heard of Toastmasters before but hadn’t built up the courage to go, standing in front of strangers is always going to be a stressful experience but I found Dublin Toastmasters to be comprised of some of the most welcoming people I have ever met.

During university I studied marketing and thoroughly enjoyed giving presentations and interacting with my class, I wanted to see if I could do this in front of strangers. I found the experience of talking in front of the assembled toastmasters an invigorating and energising experience. I have returned several times since my first visit and hope to join in the coming months.

What struck me on my first visit and in subsequent visits were the people who attend Toastmasters. Their ranks include characters, swashbucklers, messers and most importantly people who wish to better their public speaking skills in a safe and encouraging environment. The level of support for people was palpable. As I sat and listened to people speak, I turned my head to focus on the body language of the listening crowd, you could see the facial expressions and body language, willing the more nervous speaker on and visibly cheering the confident ones. The members discussed issues of the day, their passions, their pet peeves and whatever they wanted during topics. Then came the prepared speeches, it’s fascinating to see someone deliver a speech that they have prepared of their own choosing and the positive feedback they receive.

The meetings begin with the formal opening ceremony; you are welcomed by the Sergeant at Arms (A fabulously over the top title!) and introduced to the Toastmaster committee for the evening, your name is taken and read out as a formal welcome. People are delighted to see you return, there is a tangible feeling in the air that you are welcome and that the club is seeking to grow its ranks. I was fortunate enough to witness the club’s committee election and the early responsibility offered to all members.

Toastmasters Dublin is a fantastic place to meet people, grow your public speaking confidence and see the other side of arguments; I would encourage one and all to come along. They welcomed me with open arms and I’m sure they would offer you the same!
